​Rebus was invented in September of 1981. It started out as a cube game [see the photo below], which was made out of wood, including the storage box. The idea of making it into a tile game was stalled until the solution of drawing different colored tiles from 3 different bags made the game playable.  This meant the player would get a mix of nouns and verbs to more easily form sentence rebuses.
